Mark Millar over Jim Carreys rol in Kick-Ass 2
Gisteren werd bekend dat Jim Carrey (Batman Forever, 1995) een rol heeft in Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall, van regisseur Jeff Wadlow (Never Back Down, 2008) en de originele schrijver Mark Millar. De laatste heeft op Millarworld zijn visie gegeven op het aanstellen van Carrey in de rol van Colonel Stars. Ook sprak hij over de invulling van de rol van de villain Uncle Ralphie.
Mark Millar: Okay, now THIS is very exciting.
Matthew Vaughn, Jeff Wadlow and I did a conference call with Jim a couple of weeks back and we've been itching to talk about this ever since because the energy Jim's going to bring to Colonel Stars has me buzzing as much as Nic Cage with Big Daddy. You have to remember that Big Daddy's role before Cage came on was a much more straightforward bad-ass. It was Nic who gave him that Adam West delivery and brought this incredible warmth to the character, especially with regard to Mindy.
Nic is really good friends with Jim Carrey and it's well known to everyone that Jim loved the first movie. In fact, I think he had lunch with Vaughn the day before that Conan O'Brien kick-Ass/ Superman duet. So we've been talking very informally about this for a little over two years now. We didn't quite know what Jim was going to be doing in the sequel, but the entire team loves him to bits and I've been a fan since I first saw him. I remember reading an interview with Spielberg, a great one back in Empire for a JAws anniversary, where he was saying that Jim would be his choice for Chief Brodie were he shooting Jaws now. He said he could see the brilliant dramatic range Jim had as well as the comedy people knew him for at that time. For all these reasons, combined with the conversation we had with him on the phone, I'm so genuinely excited about this. I can't wait to see what he does once the cameras are on.
So as you can see from the online reports there's a Hell of a cast shaping up here. The movie runs from Hit-Girl #1 to Kick-Ass 2 #7 and fans of the comic will know that the part of Uncle Ralphie is still to be announced. He's the big-bad from the Hit-Girl series and you, my friends, are in for a treat.
But this is all incredibly cool. Millarworld has had two movies released so far and several in various stages of production right now (another one starts shooting in the New Year). But I think this is the closest to starstruck I've been on anything so far. LOVE Jim Carrey. Can't wait to meet him at Pinewood.

Colonel Stars is nou niet bepaald een grasspriet...Dat ligt denk ik ook erg aan het personage. Jim heeft ook al bewezen serieus te kunnen zijn dus het is niet zo dat hij altijd in iedere rol gekke bekken trekt. Nu ben ik niet bekend met Colonel Stars maar als dat personage vrij serieus is dan weet ik zeker dat Jim hem ook op die manier zal neerzetten.
Ik zag laatst de trailer van The Majestic en daarin leek hij vrij serieus te spelen.
En in The Number 23, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind en ook in I Love You Phillip Morris speelde hij geen rare freak. Hij kan het dus wel.
Inderdaad; denk ook aan Truman Show. Ik gun 'm wel deze rol, al ken ik het karakter niet.
Ik ook. Ik hoop ook echt dat het een serieuze rol is, zo zien de mensen die hem zo veroordelen ook eens van een andere verrassende kant. Is er iemand die bekend is met dit personage??
Ja, ik wel een beetje. De colonel deed me beetje aan Frank Castle denken; met een groep superhelden bestrijden ze 'het kwaad' zeg maar. 'Tis niet alsof hij heel de tijd grappen maakt; eigenlijk bloed serieus.
En met Carrey's gekken gedoe; zo vind ik hem het wel leuk doen in Liar Liar, maar vind ik het al snel oud worden met de Pet Detective films. Het ligt er soms aan hoe gek hij het speelt
Oke een verrassende keus dus om Carrey te kiezen. En zoals je bovenaan al zegt moet hij dus ook de sportschool in. Nu ben ik pas echt benieuwd! Hij gaat als het hem lukt de spijker op zijn kop te slaan de grootste verrassing van de film worden denk ik.
Het valt me ook op dat hij de laatste jaren steeds meer de serieuze kant opgaat. En hij is ook niet meer zo heel veel in films te zien.
Ik denk dat hij (nog) een serieuze hit wil doen. Iets memorabel. Een blockbuster ofzo.
Hij heeft al serieuze geslaagde films, maar hij blijft vooral bekend als de gekke gozer uit Ace Ventura en Dumb & Dumber.
Ik hoop dat hij ooit toch terug een gestoorde komedie doet.
Iets in de stijl van de Will Ferrell films. Of met Will Ferrell.
Dat zou ik helemaal top vinden.
Dumb and Dumber 2 komt er aan dus dat zal hij zeker blijven doen. Maar alsjeblieft NIETS met Will Ferrell! Carrey is een veel betere komiek dan die drol van een Ferrell. Ik zie hem veel liever iets met Steve Carell doen wat volgend jaar ook gaat gebeuren in The Incredible Burt Wonderstonde. Verwacht daar best veel van.
(dat kan hij zeker, het was een schande dat hij voor Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind geen Oscarnominatie kreeg)
