Troy Duffy, de schrijver en regisseur van Boondock Saints en de aankomende Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day, heeft in een interview met /Film het één en ander prijsgegeven over zijn volgende project. De film heet The Good King en Duffy claimt dat het iets heel anders is dan de Boondog Saints films. Het gaat om een period piece buddy comedy, waarvan de komische elementen zo zwart zijn als "een sterrenloze nacht op de bodem van de oceaan".
Duffy gaf zelf een korte beschrijving van het verhaal:
It is basically a tale from the mind of an inebriant. A present-day English uncles babysitting his nephews and hes a notorious drunk literature guy. And they ask him to tell his story, the one he wrote, rather than their common bedtime story. And hes sauced after playin with em all night, so he tells them the story The Good King and the whole film is a flashback to 1500s about this king and his friend, the Duke, that virtually do nothing but womanize and booze and discover everything debaucherous that we enjoy in the 20th century, way back in the day. And theyre like huge freaking rock stars.
Het lijkt erop dat het periode-gedeelte van de film niet al te serieus genomen zal worden: Ik zit niet vast aan historische feiten, aangezien het allemaal uit het hoofd van een dronkaard komt, zei Duffy. De film werd eerder al beschreven als in de stijl van Monty Python en Mel Brooks.
