Binnenkort moet 'ie uitkomen: The Last Airbender, de nieuwste film van M. Night Shyamalan. In Amerika is de film zelfs al uit, en daar wordt hij volledig met de grond gelijk gemaakt. Met 118 recensies scoort de film slechts 8% op RottenTomatoes.com, en dat is wel heel erg laag. Men deed uitspraken als "The film ends with a set-up for a sequel, which those unfortunate enough to endure this torturous mess can only hope never occurs," aldus David M. Kimmel.

Dat vervolg is precies waar MTV het met de regisseur over had. Wat blijkt? Het vervolg is al grotendeels uitgewerkt. "The third is more ambiguous, but the second one, I've written a draft that I'm really happy with and is darker and richer, and it has a wonderful antagonist in it in Azula, who's kind of like our only real, pure antagonist in the series, so I'm excited about that."

Verder had Shyamalan het ook over de Kyoshi Warrios: "I probably won't show the Kyoshi Warriors because I want to save them for the second movie, because I'm going to have to introduce them all over again.” De personages zouden oorspronkelijk in de eerste film voorkomen, maar door omstandigheden hebben ze de film niet gehaald. "We shot [the scene] and [the Kyoshi Warriors] were amazing, and we spent an unbelievable amount of time choreographing them. And they just distracted from the movie, because the movie wasn't about them."

Als de studiobonzen enkel en alleen kijken naar de box-office resultaten van de eerste film, zou het best nog eens kunnen dat het vervolg er, ondanks de zeer negatieve recensies gaat komen. Met een budget van 150 miljoen dollar haalde de film namelijk al 70 miljoen binnen in de Amerikaanse bioscopen.

The Last Airbender draait vanaf 19 augustus 2010 in de Nederlandse bioscopen.
