De genomineerden voor de 79ste Golden Globe Awards zijn aangekondigd, met Kenneth Branagh's Belfast en Jane Champion's The Power of the Dog die samen leiden met de meeste nominaties. Beide films zijn namelijk maar liefst zeven keer genomineerd.

De kanshebbers werden dit jaar aangekondigd door rapper Snoop Dogg en de HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) presidente Helen Hoehne. Belfast en The Power of the Dog maken de meeste kans. Zo kreeg Belfast nominaties voor de categorieën Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor (Jamie Dornan and Ciarán Hinds), Best Actress (Caitriona Balfe) en Best Original Song.

The Power of the Dog is dan ook Belfast's grootste concurrent, aangezien deze film vaak voor dezelfde categorie genomineerd werd, namelijk Best Picture, Best Director, en Best Screenplay, net als Best Actor (Benedict Cumberbatch), Best Supporting Actor (Kodi Smit-McPhee), Best Supporting Actress (Kirsten Dunst) en Best Original Score.

Andere grote titels die vaker voorkomen zijn het Netflix-drama Don't Look Up, Steven Spielberg's musical West Side Story en het waargebeurde verhaal over de beroemde tennissters William en Serena Venus, genaamd King Richard.
