Gotti: Three Generations wordt gebaseerd op de visie van John Gotti's zoon John Gotti jr. De maffiabaas Gotti was jarenlang hoofd van de beruchte Gambino familie, één van de vijf New Yorkse misdaadfamilies. Gotti werd familiehoofd in 1986 na het omleggen van zijn voorganger Paul Castellano. In 1992 verdwijnt Gotti achter de tralies nadat hij is verraden door zijn "underboss" Salvatore Gravano a.k.a. Sammy the Bull. In 2002 overlijdt Gotti aan keelkanker.
