In The Purple Rose of Cairo neemt acteur Gil het op tegen zijn filmpersonage Tom, wanneer de jonge vrouw Cecilia na haar ontslag tientallen keren dezelfde film bezoekt en het hoofdpersonage Tom opeens het doek komt uitgelopen.
