Michael Crichton, schrijver van onder andere Jurassic Park, overleed eind vorig jaar ten gevolge van kanker. Nu blijkt dat hij vlak voor zijn dood nog een boek heeft geschreven, namelijk Pirate Latitudes. Hoewel het boek nog niet eens een uitgever heeft, staat Steven Spielberg nu al op het punt om het te gaan verfilmen.

USA Today komt met het nieuws dat Spielberg David Koepp (screenwriter van Jurassic Park) heeft ingehuurd om een screenplay te schrijven voor Pirate Latitudes. Spielberg zal gaan produceren en overweegt zelfs te gaan regisseren. Schijnbaar heeft hij altijd al zijn eigen piratenfilm willen maken en dit lijkt zijn kans te zijn (zaten er geen piraten in Hook?)

“Michael schreef voor zijn dood een spannend boek wat naar mijn mening uiterst geschikt is voor het witte doek. Michael en ik hebben twintig jaar lang uitstekend met elkaar samengewerkt. Elke keer als ik een film maakte met een Michael Crichton boek of script, wist ik dat het goed zat. Michael dacht er altijd net zo over, en we gaan er graag van uit dat hij er nog steeds zo over denkt."

Het boek (320 pagina's) werd tussen Crichton's gegevens gevonden na zijn dood. Het verhaal speelt zich af aan de kust van Jamaica rond 1665 en wordt beschreven als een 'avonturenverhaal zoals Crichton lezers dat nog nooit gelezen hebben'.
