Regisseur Werner Herzog overweegt serieus de regie op zich te nemen van een derde Bill & Ted film. De man achter films als Rescue Dawn (2006) en The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call - New Orleans (2009) en de docu's Encounters at the End of the World (2007) en Into the Abyss (2011) werd geïnterviewd door de website Movie Web en gaf het volgende antwoord op de vraag of hij het project ziet zitten:

"I have not seen the first and the second (movie). So I do not know for sure. But, if it is a good screenplay, Yes! I am ready for all sorts of wild stuff."

Hoofdrolspeler Alex Winter (Bill) en Keanu Reevs (Ted) lieten afgelopen maanden al weten dat een twee sequel na Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) en Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991) dichtbij is. Een eerste script zou al af zijn. Reeves zei al eerder het volgende over het plot:

"When we last got together, part of it was that Bill and Ted were supposed to have written the song that saved the world, and it hasn't happened. So they've now become kind of possessed by trying to do that. Then there's an element of time and they have to go back."
