Op het 28e Sundance-festival in het Amerikaanse Park City (Utah) hebben Beasts of the Southern Wild van Benh Zeitlin en The House I Live In van Eugene Jarecki zaterdagavond de Grote Prijs voor Amerikaanse Fictie en voor Documentaires gewonnen. De film The Surrogate won de publieksprijs.

In de categorie Buitenlandse Fictiefilm ging de Grote Prijs van de Jury naar Violeta se fue a los cielos van de Chileen Andrés Wood, een biopic van de zangeres Violeta Parra. De Grote Prijs van de Jury voor Buitenlandse Documentaire ging naar de Israëlische film The law in these parts.

Op het Sundance-festival werden zowat 120 films getoond. Het festival, dat opgericht werd door acteur Robert Redford als tegengewicht voor de Hollywood-studio's, zet onafhankelijke filmproducties in de schijnwerpers. Het groeide uit tot het grootste filmfestival en de grootste filmmarkt van de Verenigde Staten.
