Miramax en Oscar-winnende regisseur Martin Scorsese kondigden gisteren aan dat ze bezig zijn met het ontwikkelen van een tv-serie gebaseerd op de film Gangs of New York. In de originele film uit 2002 over de confrontaties tussen rivaliserende bendes in New York aan het einde van de 19e eeuw speelden Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz en Daniel Day-Lewis de hoofdrollen.

De serie zal gaan over een groot aantal gebeurtenissen waarin verschillende Amerikaanse bendes centraal stonden, niet alleen in New York, maar ook andere steden zoals Chicago en New Orleans. Daarmee gaan we ook zien hoe de georganiseerde misdaad is ontstaan in de Verenigde Staten.

Alsdus Scorsese:

"This time and era of America's history and heritage is rich with characters and stories that we could not fully explore in a two hour film. A television series allows us the time and creative freedom to bring this colorful world, and all the implications it had and still does on our society, to life. I am excited to partner with Miramax in telling these stories."

De voorzitter van Miramax, Richard Nanula, voegde daaraan toe:
