Joss "Buffy" Whedon heeft de obligate vriendengroep rond voor zijn horrorproject The Cabin in the Woods. De relatief onbekende en onervaren acteurs Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz en Jesse Williams spelen de vijf tieners die in een hutje in het bos belanden. Eerder waren al Richard Jenkins en Bradley Whitford gecast. Whedon zal produceren en is verantwoordelijk voor het scenario, de regie is in handen van Drew Goddard.

Het lijkt erop dat Whedon, ondanks een onbekende cast, niet voor standaard eendimensionaal slachtvee wil gaan. "Finding this ensemble has been very hard and very rewarding," zei hij over de casting. "Each of the 'kids' is unique, fascinating and talented, and like true friends, the group is more than the sum of its parts. These are people you care about, able to go toe to toe with the amazing actors we've corralled thus far, and not unpretty in the bargain. I can't wait to harm them."

De Amerikaanse première was eigenlijk gepland voor 23 oktober, maar is verschoven naar 5 februari. Waarschijnlijk probeert de film op deze manier te profiteren van Valentijnsdag en tegelijkertijd een mogelijke Halloweenrelease van Saw VI te ontlopen.
