Eerder dit jaar vernamen we het verrassende nieuws dat Universal van plan is om The Bourne Legacy te maken met of zonder hoofdrolspeler Matt Damon en regisseur Paul Greengrass. In oktober hoorden we vervolgens dat de vierde Bourne geschreven en geregisseerd zal gaan worden door Tony Gilroy, de schrijver van de eerste drie delen.

MTV News sprak met Damon en vroeg hem of hij inmiddels al heeft gesproken met Gilroy over zijn plannen met The Bourne Legacy.

"I have no idea what he has planned. But he's a very smart guy, so I'm sure it's going to be good. I do know that whatever he's doing won't preclude Paul [Greengrass] and I from coming back and doing ours."

Damon legt uit dat Universal van Bourne een eeuwige reeks wil maken, waarin de hoofdrol in de loop der jaren steeds door andere acteurs gespeeld kan gaan worden. Dit is te vergelijken met de James Bond films.

"What they ultimately want is a franchise that can kind of go on and on. We explained to them that our character isn't like James Bond. You can't send him on a mission. There's character development, there's an arc that the character has traveled through the three movies. You don't just start over at the beginning of every movie. So I think what they're looking for is a way to build that in so that they can continue without Paul and me eventually."

Staat Damon er voor open om ooit nog eens in Bourne's schoenen te stappen?

"I love the character. I love the stories. But only if Paul Greengrass says he will direct again. So far, though, he's decided not to. I'd definitely say yes if he went for it. I know he would have a great story, and it would protect the legacy of what we created."
