Een maand geleden berichtten we nog dat er werk wordt gemaakt van een sequel op Martin Scorsese's boksklassieker Raging Bull. Nu komt het nieuws binnen dat de opnames voor Raging Bull 2 daadwerkelijk zijn begonnen in Los Angeles. De regie is in handen van Martin Guigui, die tevens het scenario voor zijn rekening nam. William Forsythe neemt het stokje van Robert De Niro over als Jake LaMotta en de cast bestaat verder uit James Russo, Joe Mantegna, Natasha Henstridge, Penelope Ann Miller, Alicia Witt, Paul Sorvino, Robert Davi, Tom Sizemore, Bill Bellamy en Ray Wise.

Deel 2 wordt zowel een sequel als een prequel voor de fans die meer over het verleden van Jake LaMotta willen weten en benieuwd zijn naar wat hij nu aan het doen is. Tijdens een interview zei regisseur Guigui het volgende:

“My first reaction when I was offered it was ‘No, this is sacred ground. Then I read the book, Raging Bull II, and then I met Jake. When I met Jake that sealed the deal.”

Hoofdrolspeler Forsythe ging in op de talloze negatieve reacties op de aankondiging van de sequel:

"I understand that because it’s such an iconic, beautiful and amazing first film — one of the great films maybe of all time. But our story has a lot more heart and I think it’s a beautiful depiction of who Jake really is. It’s the full spectrum. If you hang out for 10 minutes with Jake you’ll find out two things: He has a heart as big as this room and he has a great sense of humour.”

Tot slot gaf de echte LaMotta zijn zegen aan de sequel:

“Who else has that done? Of course I’m excited. Two movies, one after the other, could you believe a thing like that? I’d never have believed it in a million years. But they think it’s interesting enough to do it. They must know something.”

De sequel moet ergens in 2013 uitkomen.
