Het nieuws dat er een reboot zou komen van Paul Verhoevens science fiction spektakel Starship Troopers bleek voor sommige fans van de film al een moeilijk te overkomen feit. Nu vertelde producent Toby Jaffe tijdens een interview met Empire Magazine iets dat de diehard fans waarschijnlijk nog meer tegen de borst zal stoten. De reboot zal volgens Jaffe een stuk minder gewelddadig zijn dan Verhoevens origineel.
Dit blijkt vooral met geld te maken te hebben. "The more expensive a film is, the harder it is now to make it that violent. With Recall in particular, we made a conscious choice to keep it tonally closer to something like Minority Report. It gives the studio, and us as producers, the opportunity to reintroduce it in a new way."
Het lijkt er dus ook op dat de film minder satire zal zijn zoals Verhoevens film dat was. Nu zal er gewoon meer actie in te zien zijn. "Verhoeven made his movie a critique of fascism," vertelt Jaffe, "whereas Heinlein was writing from the perspective of someone who had served in World War II. Y'know, one man's fascism is another man's patriotism..."
Of dat allemaal vooruitgang betekend, is maar de vraag, maar wat in ieder geval vooruit lijkt te gaan ten opzichte van het origineel zijn de special effects. "Working in a visual-efects renaissance as we are, we have the ability to do so much more now. We can do the Jump Suits [armoured exoskeletons from Heinlein's novel], for example, which I don't think they could have done before."
De Starship Troopers-reboot moet in de loop van 2014 in de bioscopen verschijnen.
