Peter O' Toole stopt met acteren. Dat heeft de 79-jarige Britse acteur gisteren bekendgemaakt middels een verklaring. O' Toole liet weten het niet meer op te kunnen brengen in films te spelen. Hij wilde zelf zijn afscheid regisseren en is blij dat nu te kunnen doen.
De Brit O' Toole brak door met zijn hoofdrol in de film Lawrence of Arabia in 1962, nog steeds zijn bekendste rol. Daarna speelde hij onder andere in Caligula, Man of La Mancha and Goodbye Mr. Chips. Recentelijk was hij te zien in de tv-serie The Tudors en te horen in de animatiefilm Ratatouille.
Peter O' Toole werd in zijn carrière acht keer genomineerd voor een Oscar, maar won het belangrijke beeldje nooit. Hij wordt beschouwd als een van de beste acteurs ooit zonder Oscar.

It is time for me to chuck in the sponge. To retire from films and stage. The heart for it has gone out of me: it wont come back. "My professional acting life, stage and screen, has brought me public support, emotional fulfillment and material comfort. It has brought me together with fine people, good companions with whom Ive shared the inevitable lot of all actors: flops and hits. However, its my belief that one should decide for oneself when it is time to end ones stay. So I bid the profession a dry-eyed and profoundly grateful farewell."
