In een recent interview met het Britse 'The Times' heeft Zac Efron (High School Musical, Dirty Grandpa) gesproken over sober zijn, social media en daten. Beroemd zijn is voor de acteur één van de grootste obstakels in zijn (liefdes)leven.

Eerder heeft Efron al ruim vijf jaar een relatie gehad met Vanessa Hudgens en had hij kort iets met Lilly Collins, Michelle Rodriguez en Sami Miro. Maar daten zit er gewoon niet in voor de acteur. “Dating is something I’ll never be able to do,” vertelde hij tijdens het interview. “As in the dictionary definition of dating, because one way or another I’ve impacted that person’s life and they’ll soon realize it. A date has to be very long to dispel whatever people think about me.”

Toch heeft de 28-jarige Efron onlangs online daten geprobeerd, maar dit had niet het resultaat wat hij verwachtte. “Amazingly, when I signed up for Tinder, nobody swiped me! They thought it was fake. That never happened. Aha-ha.” Tinder is niet het enige waar je hem niet snel meer op zal zien. Ook zijn Twitter en Instagram worden tegenwoordig door iemand anders geüpdatete. “I lost my mind because of the internet. I’d read 30 positive things and one bad thing, then I’d harbor that bad thing. It drove me crazy.”

Zac Efron sprak tevens over zijn gevecht met depressie, alcohol en drugs. In het begin van 2013 besloot hij naar een afkickkliniek te gaan. Tot op heden is hij nog steeds lid van Alcoholics Anonymous en is het voor hem belangrijk om te praten over deze moeilijke periode. “There’s a theory that actors should live like monks. You stay private, you make a great movie, then that’s all people see and you’re not a product of your struggle. But if you’re comfortable sharing your story, celebrate it. Most days I wake up excited now.”
