Een tweede X-Files film is nog steeds mogelijk volgens Frank Spotnitz, die destijds executive producer van de serie was. Zodra er een overeenkomst is tussen bedenker Chris Carter en Fox, zal er samen met David Duchovny en Gillian Anderson een script worden uitgewerkt. Spotnitz wil met The X-Files 2 een nieuwe weg inslaan:

"There's still a very good chance that we will all do another 'X-Files' movie but we're not going into the mythology [in the sequel]. Of course, we will catch up with the characters and what is going on in their lives, but it's not about the alien conspiracy. It's not about that."
