Zoals verwacht lijkt Wright een zeer vermakelijke blockbuster te hebben afgeleverd die héél anders is dan de verfilming uit 1987 met Arnold Schwarzenegger in de hoofdrol.

Critici zijn het erover eens dat veelzijdig acteur Glen Powell nogmaals toont waartoe hij in staat is. Het bombastische verhaal is trouwer aan het boek en heeft qua toon en stijl dat typische energieke 'Wright'-sausje.
De balans tussen old-school chaotische actie en karakter-emotie is magisch en sommige (zwakke) passages uit het boek zijn zelfs op een aantal vlakken verbeterd.

Kortom, een klassieker lijkt in de maak. Toch zijn er ook wat puntjes van kritiek, zoals de speelduur die net iets te lang is de overvloed aan personages.

I loved Stephen King's book, but Edgar Wright's THE RUNNING MAN floored me. He trimmed the weakest parts of the book and even took swings and improved upon it.
