USA Today heeft een eerste officiële foto van Iron Man 2 gepubliceerd. Op de foto zien we hoofdrolspeler Robert Downey Jr. als Tony Stark. Naast superheld Iron Man gaan we een groot aantal nieuwe personages zien, waaronder Whiplash (Mickey Rourke), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) en Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell). Ook keert Samuel L. Jackson terug als Nick Fury en neemt Don Cheadle de rol van Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes over van Terrence Howard.
Regisseur Jon Favreau liet tegenover de krant ook het volgende weten: "How many superheroes are open about their true identities? We wanted to play with that idea. But it obviously has consequences in his relationships, on the team. There are a lot of areas we can explore."
