Martin Scorsese is nog steeds druk bezig met de promotie van zijn laatste film, Shutter Island, en er wordt natuurlijk niet alleen maar over die film gepraat. Shortlist interviewde de regisseur en vroeg hem naar zijn Frank Sinatra biopic. De interviewer vroeg Scorsese waar de film meer op zal gaan lijken, Goodfellas of The Aviator. Scorsese reageerde als volgt:
I was hoping it would be a combination of the two. Yeah, because in structure Id like it to be more like GoodFellas. But like The Aviator, it only deals with certain times in his life. We cant go through the greatest hits of Sinatras life. We tried this already. Just cant do it. So the other way to go is to have three or four different Sinatras. Younger. Older. Middle-aged. Very old. You cut back and forth in time and you do it through the music. See what Im saying? So thats what were trying for. Its very tricky [laughs].
Verder wil Scorsese dolgraag twee films maken die omschreven kunnen worden als low-budget, down-and-dirty street movies. Het lijkt erop dat zijn 30 dagen durende shoot van de pilot van Boardwalk Empire hem heeft doen beseffen hoe het was om vroeger een film te maken.
I shot an HBO pilot, Boardwalk Empire I did that, shot it in 30 days. For me, its like a new lease on life. Im trying to get myself to a point where I can work faster and cheaper.
Scorsese zegt dat hij tegenwoordig nauwelijks meer kan ontkomen aan problemen met budgets of deadlines:
Youre always on the line. Fighting, fighting, fighting to get the film made that you want made. And if you go cheaper, you might have more of a stand. And thats what Im hoping to do.
Tot slot werd Scorsese gevraagd naar eventuele toekomstige 3D projecten. De regisseur heeft al vaak genoeg aangegeven dat hij erg enthousiast is over de ontwikkeling en Variety berichtte laatst dat hij met één van zijn volgende films, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, wellicht het driedimensionale pad zal gaan bewandelen. Toch heeft hij er momenteel geen haast mee om zijn films in 3D op te nemen.
I would like to [make a 3D film]. Im very excited by 3D But if the camera move is going to be a 3D effect, it has to be for dramatic purposes not just throwing spears at the audience. And that, maybe I cant do that. Maybe my daughters generation shes 10 now can think that way.
