Op de set van Red sprak /Film met John Malkovich. De acteur was niet te beroerd om het te hebben over zijn betrokkenheid bij Sam Raimi’s inmiddels geschrapte Spider-Man 4. Hij zou de villain Vulture gaan spelen maar toen werd plots besloten dat de franchise een reboot nodig had. Weg rol!

Malkovich: “Well, I think a lot of the people who sort of follow that genre… I’m not sure, I never really spoke with Sam about this, but I’m not sure they—maybe the kind of fanbase, the fanboys—either didn’t approve of The Vulture as an adversary for Spidey to some extent…or maybe the studio didn't. Or maybe that was totally unrelated to why it fell apart.”

De acteur staat er over het algemeen niet om bekend dat hij aan dit soort blockbusters mee werkt. Hij tekende onlangs echter ook al voor een rol in Transformers 3. Dit is slechts een schrale troost voor het mislopen van de rol van Vulture:

“Yes, I was disappointed. But because I like Sam and I like Toby Maguire and all that stuff, and the producers, two of whom I’d met before because I’d been offered Green Goblin on the first Spider-Man… I came to like them, so sure why not? But it didn’t play out.”

Marvel is overigens nog steeds op zoek naar een geschikte Peter Parker voor Marc Webbs reboot. Namen die over het www zwerven zijn Jim Sturgess, Josh Hutcherson en Zac Efron.
