In september 2008 kwam een Hollywood roddelblad met een foto waarop Eva Longoria het kantoor van Marvel verliet met een een stapeltje leesvoer, waaronder een The Avengers comic. Nu Longoria’s tv-show Desperate Housewives ten einde komt, werd er meteen op los gespeculeerd dat Longoria in de race zou zijn voor de rol van Janet Van Dyne aka Wasp, één van de oprichters van The Avengers en de toekomstige echtgenote van Ant-Man. Het bleef een tijdje stil rondom deze verhalen...tot nu.

Fox News blog Fox 411 bericht dat Longoria volgens een betrouwbare bron heel dicht tegen de rol van Wasp aanzit in een tweede Avengers film. Het bericht gaat als volgt:

“Marvel is in negotiations with Eva and she is just right for the role. First, she read for the part, then she went into the studio for camera tests. The team liked her for The Wasp so much that she did green screen work in the late spring. She’s perfect in size and attitude. Eva is cute, sexy and full of energy for the part. The character is a bit like Gabby, her character on ‘Desperate Housewives’.”

Tijdens Comic-Con nam regisseur Edgar Wright de tijd om aan Cinema Blend uit te leggen waarom zijn Ant-Man niet in The Avengers thuispast. De superheld wordt niet betrokken in Joss Whedons film, die vanaf 3 mei 2012 in de Nederlandse bioscopen moet draaien.

“I talked to Kevin Feige about that a while back where we just discussed about whether he would be in The Avengers. The thing is, the script that I’ve written, you know, whether it’s next or not I don’t know, the chronology of it or the way it works wouldn’t really fit in with what they do. And my film is very much an introduction to that character, and so it wasn’t something where it felt right to introduce him in that film. Maybe if I do the solo Ant-Man film and maybe there’s a later Avengers then they could draft him in later. But it didn’t work with the kind of the angle that we were going to do with the origin that I’d written.”

IGN sprak verder met Jon Favreau (Iron Man) over het feit dat Edward Norton werd vervangen door Mark Ruffalo als de Hulk in The Avengers. Hij zei er het volgende over:

“It’s tricky. I know Edward, and I dig the guy’s talent tremendously. He’s always been a very great guy… I’m sure that however this comes out, it’s going to be something that’s amenable to both the filmmaker and the studio. I know that we faced the challenge of recasting with Don Cheadle and Terrence Howard, and although I think breaking continuity is always a challenge and should be avoided whenever possible, it is the reality of the movie business that sometimes things don’t work out.”
