Hoewel het leek alsof James Cameron nog even wilde wachten met de onvermijdelijke sequel op Avatar, is hij toch van dat plan teruggekomen en maakt Variety vandaag bekend dat Cameron de sequel op Avatar tot zijn eerstvolgende project heeft gemaakt.

Cameron heeft zijn handtekening gezet onder een contract bij Fox voor Avatar 2 en Avatar 3. Het is de bedoeling dat de tweede Avatar in december van 2014 in de bioscopen verschijnt en het derde deel exact een jaar later.

James Cameron zal begin volgend jaar beginnen aan de scripts voor de twee films, maar heeft nog niet besloten of hij de twee sequels gelijktijdig wil opnemen of toch individueel van elkaar. Dit had Cameron zelf te melden over de films:

In the second and third films, which will be self contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of 'Avatar's' visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world. I'm looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild.
