Na het succes van The Town kan Ben Affleck zichzelf rekenen tot een gerespecteerd regisseur. Hij kan momenteel kiezen uit verschillende projecten, waaronder American Bullshit, Replay en Tales From The Gangster Squad, maar tot het moment van nu had de acteur/regisseur nog niets besloten. Dit is nu veranderd.
In februari ging het gerucht al dat Afflecks volgende regieklus Argo zou gaan worden. Dit is nu bevestigd. Argo wordt een spionagefilm gebaseerd op het waargebeurde verhaal over hoe de CIA de Amerikaanse burgers uit Tehran in Iran redde, door te doen alsof er een sciencefiction film werd gemaakt. Affleck zal zowel gaan regisseren als de hoofdrol vertolken, terwijl George Clooney en Grant Heslov optreden als producent en het script komt van de pen van Chris Terrio. Dit alles heeft overigens tot gevolg dat Affleck geen tijd zal hebben voor een rol in Baz Luhrmans The Great Gatsby.
The story is a CIA rescue mission during the Iran Hostage Crisis, when six American embassy staff escaped the compound and were on the lam in Tehran for months until the CIA rescued them by creating a fake Hollywood production company and pretended to be in Iran location scouting for a big-budget sci-fi epic. I swear, its all true. The CIA even got an office for their fake production company at Sunset/Gower studios, had a script and concept art, and took out ads in Variety. There are many more strange digressions in detail, but Ill let you find out about them in the story.
