The Weinstein Company (TWC) heeft bekend gemaakt dat ze de film W.E., het regiedebuut van Madonna, gaat distribueren in de States. Het romantisch drama W.E. is ook mede door Madonna geschreven en geproduceerd. Hoofdrollen in de film zijn voor o.a. Abbie Cornish (Limitless), Oscar Isaac (Drive), James D'Arcy (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World), Andrea Riseborough (Never Let Me Go) en Natalie Dormer ("The Tudors"). De popster heeft zelf geen rol in de film.

Madonna over W.E.: "'W.E.' is about the nature of true love, and the sacrifices and compromises that are often made. I've wanted to tell this story for a very long time, and bringing it to life has been a great adventure for me. I'm looking forward to working with Harvey and The Weinstein Company on this film." Weinstein voegt hieraan toe: "Madonna has really come into her own as a filmmaker with 'W.E.' She's taken one of the most famous romances of the 20th Century and brought it to life in a smart, sexy and thoroughly modern way. It's a terrific addition to our US release slate."

W.E. gaat over een jonge vrouw die is geobsedeerd door de affaire tussen de Britse koning Edward VIII en de Amerikaanse Wallis Simpson (Abbie Comish), een gescheiden vrouw. De Koning deed in 1936 afstand van de troon om met haar te trouwen.

Het zal in première gaan tijdens het 68e Venice Film Festival, dat plaats vindt van 31 augustus tot en met 10 september.
