Na het teleurstellende Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull hopen de fans dat het beoogde vijfde deel de reeks van Steven Spielberg, George Lucas en Harrison Ford weer uit het slop haalt. Wat producent Frank Marshall betreft gaat dit vervolg er echter nooit komen. Tegenover Collider zei hij het volgende:

I say, for me, [Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is] the last hurrah. I know that yes, we talk about it, but there’s no idea, there’s no MacGuffin.

Dit wil niet zeggen dat het niet gaat gebeuren, maar het biedt weinig hoop. Lucas vertrekt ook nog eens bij LucasFilm en geeft het stokje door aan Marshalls vrouw. Lucas zou zich willen gaan bezighouden met experimentele films, iets waar Indiana Jones 5 niet bepaald tussen past. Marshall ziet hem dan ook niet terugkeren voor een nieuwe sequel.

Yeah, no he isn’t [hungry to do another Indiana Jones]. And he’s obviously passing the baton to my wife, so…
