Al enige tijd vliegen er flink wat namen in het rond die de regie op zich zouden moeten nemen van het door Disney aangekondigde Star Wars Episode VII, die in 2015 in de bioscoop te zien moet zijn. Ook sci-fi regisseur J.J. Abrams werd lange tijd genoemd, maar hij lijkt nu definitief afgehaakt. In de laatste editie van Empire Magazine laat hij los dat hij de regieklus reeds heeft afgewezen.

Abrams werd door Disney gevraagd om aan te sluiten bij de zevende Star Wars film. Abrams tegenover Empire: "There were the very early conversations and I quickly said that because of my loyalty to Star Trek, and also just being a fan, I wouldn't even want to be involved in the next version of those things. I declined any involvement very early on. I'd rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them."

Aangezien er na Abrams aanstaande Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) waarschijnlijk nog een of meerdere Star Trek films gaan verschijnen, vroeg Empire Abrams wat hij van de ontwikkelingen vindt: "I guess the franchises could go up against each other, but I'm not thinking that far ahead." En "I'm a huge fan of Star Wars, Empire and Jedi, and the idea of the world continuing is exciting and will be amazing. Kathy Kennedy is a friend and there are no smarter producers. It's in great hands.
