Robin Hardy's spirituele sequel op zijn The Wicker Man (1974) komt langzaam dichterbij. Tot een jaar geleden heette de film nog Cowboys For Christ, maar de film gaat nu onder de naam The Wicker Tree.
The Wicker Tree is Hardy's eerste film sinds 24 jaar en gebaseerd op zijn eigen boek uit 2007. Het is zeer nauw verbonden met The Wicker Man zonder dat het per se een daadwerkelijk vervolg is. Elk personage uit 1974 heeft in The Wicker Tree een equivalent en het plot is soortgelijk aan het origineel. Het verschil is dat het dit keer gaat om een evangelische Texaanse countryzangeres en haar vriendje die proberen om een klein Schots dorpje kennis te laten maken met Jezus.
In 2007 sprak Hardy tegenover The Guardian over de film, toen deze nog Cowboys For Christ heette.
"There is a tradition among ten or fifteen little towns on the borders in Scotland... where once a year, usually around the summer solstice, they elect a young man - the brightest and the best-looking, and the cleverest, I suppose - and he appears in the centre of the town on his horse, with outriders, and he's had a lovely party the evening before with all the prettiest girls, and he then rides out of town, and everyone who has a horse or a pony or a carthorse rides after him. [What happens next?] Well, that's the point. What they do is they have a lovely picnic. Not so in my book..."
