Universal Pictures en Focus Features hebben aangekondigd dat Sam Taylor-Johnson zich gaat ontfermen over de geplande filmversie van Fifty Shades of Grey. Michael De Luca, één van de producenten van het project, heeft er alle vertrouwen in dat de Nowhere Boy regisseuse de juiste persoon is om het klusje te klaren.
"Sam's unique ability to gracefully showcase complex relationships dealing with love, emotion and sexual chemistry make her the ideal director to bring Christian and Anastasia's relationship to life. E L James characters and vivid storytelling require a director who is willing to take risks and push the envelope where needed and Sam is a natural fit.

In Fifty Shades of Grey gaat het om de relatie tussen de studente Anastasia Steele en de 27-jarige miljardair Christian Grey. De focus van het boek? De kinky dingen die de twee uithalen in de slaapkamer. Het boek heeft al twee vervolgen gekregen, ging meer dan 70 miljoen keer over de toonbank, en dus kon een verfilming niet uitblijven.
