Sinds de release van de film is er nogal wat opschudding over gebeurtenissen in : The Crimes of Grindelwald. Er zouden veel zaken niet overeenkomen met gebeurtenissen in de eerdere reeks rond het personage Harry Potter. Via Screenrant is een officiële tijdslijn verschenen van de franchise, inclusief de films in beide reeksen als en het recente theaterstuk.

Overigens wordt er mogelijk wat onnodig druk gedaan over de verschillende ontwikkelingen in The Crimes of Grindelwald. De "wonderlijke wereld" is namelijk wat complexer dan men zou vermoeden en met de aanwezigheid van bedenker / schrijfster J.K. Rowling mag aangenomen dat we tekst en uitleg krijgen in de nog drie aankomende delen in de Fantastic Beasts-reeks.
