Eduardo Sánchez was in 1999 samen met Daniel Myrick verantwoordelijk voor een revolutie binnen het horrorgenre. Het duo kwam namelijk aanzetten met de spotgoedkope film The Blair Witch Project, een film die tot de dag van vandaag dient als inspiratiebron voor talloze andere projecten. Naast het ultiem lage budget was de film één van de eerste voorbeelden van online virale marketing en betekende het ook nog eens het begin van een compleet nieuw subgenre: de 'found footage film'.
De sequel uit 2000, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, had vrijwel niets te maken met het origineel en werd niet al te best ontvangen. Sanchez en Myrick, die hier niet aan meewerkten, hadden zelf ook al een tijdje een idee voor een vervolg. Tijdens een interview met Bloody Disgusting zegt Sanchez het volgende over The Blair Witch Project 3:
Mocht de sequel er komen, dan zal Book of Shadows buiten beschouwing gelaten worden.
I actually liked the sequel but at the same time it exists in a world outside of the movie. So if we want to do a sequel to Blair Witch Project, we have to stay in that world, which Book of Shadows didnt stay in that world. Book of Shadows created a different world. Its like if the sequel to Jaws started with shots of people lined up to see Jaws in the movie theater. For Book of Shadows it worked in a certain way but to me my biggest gripe with Artisan was you shouldnt have called it Blair Witch 2. It wouldve been fine to call it Blair Witch Chronicles. It wasnt really a sequel to our movie. so it would be a direct sequel to our film living in that mythology of Burkittsville, being possessed, haunted by something.
