Er is erg geheimzinnig gedaan omtrent de nieuwe film van regisseur Christopher Nolan, Inception. Pas na lange tijd kwamen we erachter wat het plot van de film precies inhield, maar we kwamen er tegelijk ook achter dat de cast niet eens precies wist waar de film over ging. Waarschijnlijk maakt dit deel uit van de hype die gecreëerd wordt om de film, want een journalist van de LA Times had het geluk een setbezoek te mogen doen. Hij werd als volgt begroet door Nolan: "So you've read the script -- did you understand it?" Schijnbaar heeft de beste man het scenario dus mogen lezen, wat erop wijst dat de acteurs het plot ook gewoon kennen.
Tijdens het bezoek zijn er veel verschillende onderwerpen voorbij gekomen, en we hebben de interessantste stukken uit het artikel gehaald en geciteerd. Het volledig artikel valt hier te lezen.
En over zijn oorspronkelijke bedoelingen met de film het volgende. "I originally wrote it as a heist movie, and heist movies traditionally are very deliberately superficial in emotional terms. They're frivolous and glamorous, and there's a sort of gloss and fun to it. I originally tried to write it that way, but when I came back to it I realized that -- to me -- that didn't work for a film that relies so heavily on the idea of the interior state, the idea of dream and memory. I realized I needed to raise the emotional stakes. What we found in working on 'Batman' is that it's the emotionalism that best connects the audience with the material. The character issues, those are the things that pull the audience through it and amplify the experience no matter how strange things get."
"I always find myself gravitating to the analogy of a maze. Think of film noir and if you picture the story as a maze, you don't want to be hanging above the maze watching the characters make the wrong choices because it's frustrating. You actually want to be in the maze with them, making the turns at their side, that keeps it more exciting...I quite like to be in that maze."
Bovenstaande afbeelding zegt jullie misschien vrij weinig. Het is in ieder geval een still uit een vechtscène, die in de trailer te zien was. Een van de acteurs van de film bracht weken door in de set waarin hij moest leren te vechten, terwijl het geheel om hem heen draaide.
"It was like some incredible torture device; we thrashed Joseph for weeks. But in the end we looked at the footage, and it looks unlike anything any of us has seen before. The rhythm of it is unique, and when you watch it, even if you know how it was done, it confuses your perceptions. It's unsettling in a wonderful way...we want an extraordinary thing that happens in an ordinary way. That's always been the goal."
Verder maakte Ellen Page nog een interessante vergelijking tussen de film en de schrijver Haruki Murakami. Murakami is een Japans schrijver, die vrij absurdistische boeken schrijft. Enerzijds zijn ze erg herkenbaar en goed te volgen, maar soms zijn passages doorspekt met absurditeiten. "There's a tangible realism even when it gets crazy, and somehow that makes the jeopardy feel more real," aldus Page. "It's like reading a Haruki Murakami novel -- it's fantasy, but instead of feeling like some strange surreal world it feels very honest. The emotional spine of the story is there too, which is the key to his movies. There's the big scale, but the sincerity isn't left behind. The story is complicated but never confusing."
Inception draait vanaf 22 juli in de Nederlandse bioscopen.
