Dark Shadows van regisseur Tim Burton komt pas in mei uit, dus het is nog niet te laat voor allerlei interviews en kleine nieuwtjes rondom de film. Tim Burton schuwt er ook niet voor terug om nog even te vertellen dat hij de gelijknamige soapserie, waarop zijn nieuwste film gebaseerd is, gruwelijk vond.

”I think,” vertelt Burton, ”you could say it was actually awful.”

De vraag is dan natuurlijk waarom hij de film überhaupt heeft gemaakt, als de soapserie zo slecht is. Het antwoord dat hij daarop geeft is eenvoudig. De aantrekkingskracht van de soapserie ligt volgens Burton vooral in de melodramatische kant ervan. Dat viel daarnaast goed te combineren met Burton’s filmstijl: serieuze onderwerpen met een humoristische touch.

“It’s a different animal. If I go back and watch something like ‘Star Trek,’ it’s not that hard to analyze what the appeal was, and even if the show is dated you identify what it was that made it work. The ‘Dark Shadows’ appeal was a little more abstract. What I loved about it was the fact that it was a melodramatic soap opera, and, well, that flies in the face of any modern studio’s interests as far as moviemaking. But what we’ve gone for is a mixture, and that’s always what I’ve been interested in; I think most of my movies are mixtures of light and dark and serious things and things that have humor in them.”





Dark Shadows draait vanaf 10 mei in de Nederlandse bioscopen.
