Het was al een tijdje bekend dat Anton Corbijn (Control) druk bezig is met The American met in de hoofdrol George Clooney. De acteur speelt hierin "een kunstzinnige moordenaar met een indrukwekkend werkverleden, die continu in beweging is en altijd achterom kijkt."
