Begin januari zal de Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee van de AMPAS de lijst van 15 terugbrengen tot 10 films. Op 19 januari zal hetzelfde comité uiteindelijk de nominaties bekendmaken van de 5 films die op 26 februari 2012 kans maken op de eigenlijke Oscar voor Beste Visuele Effecten. Vorig jaar ging Inception met het beeldje aan de haal.
