Rond de opening van Shrek 2 werd bekend dat er niet alleen een derde, maar zelfs een vierde deel aan zit te komen over de groene animatieheld. Jeffrey Katzenberg, mede-oprichter van DreamWorks, liet recentelijk echter aan de Sydney Morning Herald weten dat het altijd al het plan was geweest om vier Shrek films uit te brengen.

The difference is they did have the guts to make all three of them back-to-back-to-back. [...] We do spend three or four years making them.
