De film Another Earth was een succes op het Sundance festival - daar won de productie namelijk de juryprijs. Daarnaast vond men bij Fox Searchlight de film blijkbaar interessant genoeg om hem uit te brengen. Another Earth lijkt in eerste instantie op een science-fiction film, gezien het uitgangspunt: "On the night of the discovery of a duplicate planet in the solar system, an ambitious young student and an accomplished composer cross paths in a tragic accident."

De regie is gedaan door Mike Cahill en de hoofdrollen worden ingevuld door Brit Marling en William Mapother.
