Douglas Trumbull, de man achter de revolutionaire visuele effecten van films als 2001: A Space Odyssey, Close Encounters of the Third Kind en Blade Runner, is een ambitieus man. Hij heeft nog steeds grote plannen voor het medium film en is van plan om een nieuw high-speed 3D systeem te gaan gebruiken. Hij sprak hier onlangs over met The Hollywood Reporter.
Trumbull zegt momenteel bezig te zijn met een film die een revolutie teweeg zal brengen binnen de wereld van films. Het wordt een first person bioscoop realiteit die niet te onderscheiden is van de werkelijkheid. Het speelt zich 200 jaar in de toekomst af en gaat over de plaats van de mens in het universum. Het wordt iets waar zowel Peter Jackson als James Cameron nog nooit aan gewerkt of gedacht heeft.
Trumbull zegt het volgende:
Im developing my own film, well, several films, but one of these films is going to go into this new territory Im talking about which is first person cinema reality which is indistinguishable from reality. The screen is going to be so big its like a window into another world. Im going way beyond anything that Peter Jackson and Jim Cameron have been doing or are thinking of, and I dont expect to get traction from investors until I can show what it is.
I have my own studio, I work in the Berkshires, I have my own stage, my own cameras, my own lights, my own editing, my own workshop, my machine shop, and Im trying to reinvent the movies with no help whatsoever from Hollywood.
Over de film zegt hij het volgende:
There are no alien monsters, and the earth is not being attacked by anybody. Its going to be a much more intelligent, what we call hard-science fiction, and I think theres absolutely nothing out there like this. I think the studios believe that they have to dumb everything down and the audience is not scientific, not up for anything truly intelligent, but I think just the opposite.
