Open Water interview

[eng]How did you come about with the idea for this movie?

Chris Kentis: It came about in several stages. Laura and I have been recreational divers for eleven year, and we get all the magazines and newsletters. In the late 1990's, we read a story about a couple that was inadvertently left in the water by their dive boat. I had a very strong emotional response to that; it was very upsetting.

Laura Lau: It wasn't until a few years later that we decided that this story would make a really great film. We actually were inspired by the new digital technology and by the Dogme 95 filmmakers, and we decided that we wanted to make a digital feature. We started to think about what kind of a story would benefit from the look that digital video imparts and what haven't we seen before, and decided this story and format would really work wonderful together.[/eng]
