Wederom is er een nieuwe foto verschenen van Bilbo Baggings (Martin Freeman) uit The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Dit keer ziet het er een stuk grauwer uit en zien we het hoofdpersonage met Sting, het zwaard dat Frodo van Bilbo kreeg in de Lord of the Rings trilogie.

Tegenover Hero Complex liet Peter Jackson ook weten zeer gelukkig te zijn met de eerdere productieproblemen rond de verfilming. Als deze zich niet hadden voorgedaan dan had niet Jackson, maar Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) de tweeluik geregisseerd: "I think fate has actually been kind to us. Yes, I think fate was kind but I don't know that we knew that along the way... This is the most enjoyable filmmaking experience of my career, by far, which is interesting since I came into it slightly reluctantly. It's all unexpected."

En co-schrijver Philippa Boyens over het verschil tussen The Hobbit en de LOTR trilogie: "The story is very much a children's story so deciding how to tell this was one of the first things we had to do. Who is the audience? It is very distinctly different, tonally, to Lord of the Rings until the very end and then you begin to see the world of Middle-earth opening up... but, having said that, we felt that it is the same audience [who will come to see the films] and then you start to worry because it is easy to repeat yourself. It is quite a similar journey, you're going from the Shire to a large, dangerous mountain."



Naast Freeman zijn er ook rollen voor Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Andy Serkis, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly en Stephen Fry. Het eerste deel uit de (3D) tweeluik verschijnt 14 december 2012. Het slotstuk The Hobbit: There and Back Again begint op 13 december 2013. Check ook de trailer.
