Net als in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 en 2015 tref je weer op de eerste dag van het nieuwe jaar het jaaroverzicht met de grootste releases in dit nieuwe filmjaar. Dit keer zijn er zo'n 240 titels meegekomen, waarvan het merendeel al gepland staat voor een Nederlandse bioscooprelease. Ieder jaar verschijnen er (officieel) zo'n 400 titels in de Nederlandse bioscopen en filmhuizen.

We zijn weer uitgegaan van de meest recente release-info en nemen de donderdag als standaard releasemoment in de week. Met name de genoteerde animatie- en kinderfilms verschijnen vaak een dag eerder dan de aangegeven datum. Helemaal onderaan tref je een aantal titels waarvoor nog geen Nederlandse datum bekend is.

Het onderstaande overzicht is met hulp van websites als Filmdepot, Pathé, IMDb en Box Office Mojo samengesteld en als er een trailer beschikbaar is, dan is deze te bekijken via de link achter de titel.

In december hebben we een aantal van de titels aangestipt in de FilmTotaal-specials 'De grootste releases van 2016 uitgelicht':
